The Lion Band Program is rich in tradition of excellence and quality in musical performance.  The success of the band program centers on pride, commitment to task, and the willingness to work hard to achieve a common goal.  As a member of the Lion Band you will make long-lasting friendships and develop a sense of camaraderie that is unique to our organization.  While we do not expect every student in the band to become a virtuoso musician, we do expect every student to establish both short and long range goals for improvement on his or her instrument.  We do expect mature, responsible attitudes and actions and lots of hard work from everyone.

Every year is a new challenge – new combinations of personalities and talent, new audiences, new music, new drills, new members, and new leadership from drum majors, drill leaders, section leaders and band officers.  By accepting membership in the R. L. Turner Lion Band, you agree to perform to the best of your abilities and work together with the band staff to make this year’s band the finest musical organization that our combined efforts can produce.

The success of the Turner Lion Bands will only be determined by the dedication, discipline, and character displayed by it’s members and the collective staff, parents and community.  It is important to remember that each member represents what is best about young people, our school, our community and involvement in a quality organization.  The goal of the band staff is to provide students with the best music education possible, as well as direct students to develop their character to the fullest extent through hard work, goal setting, cooperation, diligence, perseverance, and responsibility.

The high school band program consists of several ensembles, including the Lion Marching Band, the Colorguard/Winterguard, the Honor Band, the Symphonic Band, the Concert Band, the Jazz Band, and other chamber groups.  The membership of the marching band includes all members of the high school band program.  The activities of the marching band include playing at all Lion football games and pep rallies, community parades, area marching contests, and UIL Marching Contest.  Placement in the Honor Band, Symphonic Band and Concert Band is determined through audition near the end of the first semester and each group performs quality literature from the wind band idiom. These bands perform holiday, winter and spring concerts, as well as UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest and various area and out of state festivals.  The Jazz band is determined through audition and is only open to students who are members of one of the concert bands.  The Jazz Band performs for community functions, school district concerts, and various area and out of state jazz festivals/competitions.

The handbook is designed to help you understand the concepts and policies of our organization.  We hope the handbook can be used to answer questions of both parents and students and will prove to be a helpful guide for defining the boundaries that are important in keeping the Turner Lion Band a quality ensemble.  If utilized properly, the concepts of responsibility, teamwork, and good citizenship will develop as each student experiences the world of music.  If you need information that does not appear here, please call (972-968-5512).  We will try to assist in whatever way possible.

Band Operating Fee - Installment Payment Option
The Band Operating Fee ($70*) and the cost of Spring Trip (estimated to be $300) are significant costs and may be difficult for a family to pay all at once.  (* $50 per student for families with two or more students in Band).

As a convenience to Band Families, this year the Band is offering an installment payment option for the Operating Fee and Spring Trip Costs.

The Band’s Operating Fee finances the costs of fielding a marching band.  To help cover these costs each band student contributes $70.

Spring Trip Costs are estimated to  be $300 or less.  The later payments will be adjusted to reflect the actual amount due.

To be eligible to go on Spring Trip, the Operating Fee must be paid in full.

Checks or money orders* for these payments should be made out to the R. L. Turner Band Boosters, and put in the drop box in the band hall or mailed to:

Elaine Hoffman, Treasurer

14415 Southern Pines Ct.

Farmers Branch TX  75234

 * Cash payments will be accepted only at Band Booster Meetings.
